Spicy Hand Pies Head for Cambridge

Gumax Cafe & Grill will serve spicy pies and more

A restaurant featuring spicy hand pies will open in Cambridge between Harvard and Central squares. Gumax Cafe & Grill is under construction at 1033 Massachusetts Ave., across the street from Waypoint.

With one location open in Woodbridge, Virginia, Gumax Cafe & Grill has other locations in the works elsewhere in the country, mostly on the East Coast. Founder Augustine Guma has roots in Uganda and has made a family recipe for spicy pies the headliner on the menu at Gumax. The pies are also available wholesale and consist of dough filled with beef, chicken, vegetables, lobster, or crab.

Gumax’s Virginia restaurant also serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, including pancakes and French toast, omelets, sandwiches, salads, burgers, and a handful of specialties, like fried bone-in tilapia with peanut sauce and jollof rice with baked chicken, goat meat, and fish.

Eater has reached out for more details on the timeline for Gumax’s opening in Cambridge and will provide any updates as new information becomes available.
